Recent and Forthcoming

  • Reliquaries purportedly containing the remains of St. Nicholas of Myra (e.g. Santa Claus) were seized at the Canadian border in Winnipeg under the auspices of a 1970 UNESCO Convention on cultural patrimony. I was retained by Justice Canada to serve as an expert on relics and reliquaries in the case. In March, 2025, the relics were repatriated to the Basilica San Nicola (site of many of the saint’s other relics) in Bari, Italy in an official ceremony. • The CBC Radio documentary “Betrayal of Faith,” based on my first book, which first aired on Ideas in April of 2024 recently received an Award of Excellence from the Religion Communicators Council and is a finalist for a Gabriel Award (59th Annual Gabriel Awards Finalists - Catholic Media Association), awarded by the Catholic Media Conference. The winner will be announced sometime in May or early June. For more, please see the “Media & Outreach” Tab.
  • My essay entitled “A Double-Edged Sword: Excommunication and its Unanticipated Effects in Nineteenth-Century Canada” has been accepted by the journal Church History: Studies in Christianity and Culture and will be published in its fall issue.
